New Accents for Argentine Internet Users
After more than a year in development, Argentines will now be able to use regional accents and dialects in their web addresses. Chancellor Jorge Taiana recently singed the resolution allowing the incorporation of the letter ‘ñ’ (pronounced en-yay), accents and dieresis into Argentine domain names online.
The measure is seen as a way to strengthen the use of the language and defend Latin American identity.
Other hispanicisms to be introduced include changing the government website addresses from ‘.gov.ar’ to ‘.gob.ar’ and the use of the cedilla (ç) into Portuguese domains, also included in the project.
According to officials, almost 1.7m internet domain names lack the accents they should have, with 150,000 more created every year.
