27 Dead in Honduran Prison Riots
A series of prison riots in Honduras has left twenty-seven dead. Sparked by a shooting in the San Pedra Sula penitentiary, resulting in rival gangs armed with knives and machetes escalating the incident into a prison riot killing 9.
Tegucigalpa prison saw it’s own prison riot later in the week when 31 inmates involved in the San Pedra riots were transfered there for protection. A large group of armed men awaited the new arrivals to Tegucigalpa, leaving 18 dead.
The fighting between is being blamed on gang rivalries and overcrowding. The San Pedra Sula prison is in Honduras’- second largest – and arguably most violent – city, was built to hold 800 inmates although currently houses around 3,000.
Order has now been restored by the police.
