STRIKE! Farmers Resume Protests in Campo Crisis

May 2nd, 2008 | By Josh | Category: South America News

Having failed to reach an agreement with the government by the self-imposed May 2 deadline, the farmers are returning to their protests today, albeit in a slightly different form.

Alfredo De Angeli went on Radio 10 today to confirm the resumption of protests but also to assuage public concerns. The strike is only intended to affect exports of meat and grain, while stocks meant for supermarkets will be sent as normal. So long as the negotiations continue with the government, the cuts in food shipments won’t be deepened.

Despite the Rural Society formally expressing contrition for the effects of the previous road blockages on Argentine citizens, there were conflicting messages from other farmers’ groups. Eduardo Buzzi of the Argentina Agrarian Federation said that the protesters intend "to give information" to the drivers, which could be interpreted as anything from delaying to detaining drivers with shipments of meat and grain.

The government has warned that any shortages in supermarkets will result in the immediate dissolution of agreements from the past month of negotiations.

The farmers are currently fighting the government over a new system of export taxes which bring the levy on soy and beef exports to nearly 50%.
