A Weekend of Uncontrollable Futbol Violence

Mar 19th, 2008 | By Josh | Category: South America News

A savage battle for control of the Boca Juniors barra brava (supporter group), La Doce, spilled out into the streets this weekend. A melee lasting for 30 minutes involving Boca fans, police and bystanders erupted outside of the La Bombonera , Boca’s stadium. Nearly 200 people were arrested, a Mercedes Benz van was torched, a car was upended and one person was sent to the hospital with multiple stab wounds and a permanently disfigured face from the attack.

The trouble dates to 1994, when a power vacuum was created in La Doce. That year the previous leader, Rafa Di Zeo, began serving his 20-year sentence for the death of two River fans in 1994. Leaderless, the club is now split in two with both sides willing to spill blood to gain control.

This was just one of many incidents involving futbol hooligans over the weekend in Argentina. On Thursday the Gimnasia de Jujuy team bus was boarded by armed members of their barra brava while the team arrived at practice. Brandishing guns and threatening the players, the barra brava demanded better performance from the team before leaving with player’s jackets and uniforms.

On Friday night a 17 year-old girl was killed on the way to a match and on Saturday a 21 year-old fan of Velez Sarsfeld was shot while he was traveling to San Lorenzo’s stadium for a match. Police suspect the barras of either San Lorenzo of Huracan were responsible for the murder.

In the wake of the murder the game was canceled inciting the fans to riot and clash with police and leaving the stadium in ruins.
